Welcome

Greetings. Welcome to the Isa Metrics blog.

Isa Metrics' mission is to collect and organise Uganda's sports information and make it accessible for impactful insights. The vision is to be the trusted leader in sports data, analytics and archiving that helps the Ugandan sports industry drive growth.

What Sports Analytics Entails

In this line of work, I'll concentrate more on the Data Analysis than the Data Science. Whereas Data Science is broader and encompasses tasks related to finding patterns in large data sets and utilises machine learning, Data Analysis on the other hand focuses more on querying, visualising and intepreting data. So, sports analysis conceptualises sports information around four main aspects:

  1. Predictive analytics, to identify trends, correlations and causations. In this aspect it can cover forecasting of finishing positions of participants in sporting events.
  2. Prescriptive analytics, to predict likely outcomes and make decision recommendations. This aspect examines performance, e.g., measuring impact gained from utilising bench players.
  3. Diagnostic analytics, analysing poor perfornance and figuring out reason for poor performance, e.g., changes in second half performance versus first half performance.
  4. Descriptive analytics, analysing the content and quality of a data set.

To begin this journey, a lot more collection will be conducted in this early phase, in order to build an information database. I have some headway on rugby data collected over the past 10 years. In that period, sports teams in Uganda have utilised social media more, providing updates on match day squads, results and leading scorers. I have also utilised newspaper archives to build historical data and continue to use them.

The best source of information still remains the sports leagues or sports governing bodies. I have reached out to a few that have obliged and I am grateful to them for this.

Moving forward, I shall be publishing a weekly review of key stats. With time, I'll publish more detailed featured articles.
