Greetings. The 2026 Premiership regular season concluded with Pirates as table leaders, after defeating Walukuba Barbarians 57-06 at King's Park. At Kyadondo, KOBs defeated Buffaloes 27-23 to secure second place as Buffaloes earned the required bonus point to seal the third position. Heathens recorded a bonus-point win after scoring 3 tries to none in a 30-12 win over Mongers in Entebbe. Victoria Sharks avenged their Uganda Cup loss to Impis by recording a 39-22 away win, running in 6 tries to Impis' sole try. Rhinos recorded a first win against Hippos since 2018, with an 08-03 result at Kyambogo. And in the battle between the only 2 teams without a win, Kakira Simbas triumphed over Warriors 29-15 after scoring 5 tries to their opponents' 2.

In this week's bulletin, the thematic review of the weekend game has had to be shelved in order to cover the predictive model as we head into the playoffs.

Chasing History: Defending the Premiership (How does this year's title defence compare to previous efforts)
At the beginning of the season, we mentioned what was at stake for the Big Three teams in the land; Heathens had never gone two consecutive years without a Premiership title since the period 2006-2008, KOBs had not won the Premiership since 2021 and Pirates had never successfully defended major silverware. As far as title defence goes, the Pirates class of 2026 has done a commendably good job.
Pirates won their first 3 games of the season. Comparatively 2 of the last 5 defending champions lost a game in the first 2 weeks, including 2 Week 1 losses (Heathens 2023 and Pirates 2024). The 2026 Pirates lost their first game in Week 4, 1 game short of the Heathens class of 2025 who lost their first game in Week 5.
At the end of 11 game weeks, Pirates had 10 wins and 1 loss. The only other defending champion with a comparable record up to that point of the season are the 2023 Heathens. However, Pirates have been top of the table for 5 weeks, the most of any defending champion dating back to 2022, and they have achieved this in an 11-week season whereas the 2022 and 2023 seasons had 18 weeks.
The prowess demonstrated has put them ahead in our prediction for the favourite to win the Premiership.
Playoff Predictions
The playoffs and their knockout format presents a reduced amount of possibilities that we can use to predict the likely winner. For the 2026 playoffs, a third iteration of our predictive model has been deployed. The first version was utilised at the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, a simple version that looked at the 2024 performance of the teams, the World Rugby rankings prior to the start of the tournament, and each team's respective history with their opponent.
For the 2025 Uganda Cup semifinals, this was applied to club games. In place of World Rugby rankings, a rating system for clubs had to be formulated, looking at 2025 performance data.
In the third iteration, the club performance data is extended back to the beginning of the current playoff era, in 2024. The Uganda Cup data is omitted due to fewer games played per team (each team had at least 4 guaranteed games), more walkovers and reduced game durations (as evidenced in the 2025 edition) compared to the Premiership. Perhaps the biggest detriment of the Uganda Cup in computing a rating is the strengths of victory; each Premiership team is in a Pool of five teams, with at least 2 opponents that are regional teams, playing at a lower rang of competition. With only Premiership data, there is further consideration given to average game performance in scoring and defending to paint a clearer picture beyond just winning or losing a game.
The work of Nate Silver of the Silver Bulletin (formerly at FiveThirtyEight) has always been a pivotal reference point and guide, especially how he demonstrated each team's successive probabilities with every stage of a knock-out tournament. The successive probabilities were only omitted in the Uganda Cup version, and they make a comeback in this current version. With this method, we are able to pinpoint the most likely semifinal pairings and the most likely Grand Final matchup.
The most likely semifinal matchups are Pirates vs Heathens and KOBs vs Buffaloes. The Sharks and Mongers have the best shot at upsetting their quarterfinal opponents, and thus the Mongers vs KOBs semifinal matchup has a 29% chance whereas the Victoria Sharks vs Pirates semifinal fixture has a 28% chance of happening.
For the Grand Final, at this stage of the tournament, there is a 16% chance that we get a Grand Final featuring the top 2 teams. The least likely Grand Final matchup is Impis vs Walukuba, with a likelihood of 0.88% since both teams are on the side of the bracket of the teams that defeated them in the regular season (Impis is in the same bracket as KOBs, Buffaloes and Mongers, teams they lost to with an average margin of -9.33; Walukuba is in the same bracket as defending champions Pirates, 2024 champions Heathens, and Victoria Sharks - teams that they conceded to a total of 15 tries while scoring only 4).
Erratum
The matchday form from the Week 10 game between Hippos and Pirates assigned a try by Alex Aturinda to Isaac Massa. Upon confirmation with Pirates' Fans Coordinator Daniel Abaasa and Massa's own account of the events, the try was re-assigned to Aturinda moving his season tally to 8 tries heading into the final game of the regular season. Aturinda completed the regular season with 11 tries.
